Bowls at Club North Haven

The club is home to over 300 bowling members and a favoured destination for travelling bowlers. We have several bowls teams, fully accredited coaches and top class greens.

The Club has embraced the conversion of two of its greens to synthetic. The greens, installed by KCL Sports, can be played on year-round, and are playable within minutes of rain ceasing.

Environmentally, the synthetic greens do not rely on chemical treatments and their reliance on water is considerably less than traditional greens. In an area of permanent water restrictions, and despite the Club's use of bore-water, the new greens are a welcome inclusion in the area's conservation efforts.

Bowls Coaching

We have a number of accredited coaches to assist new bowlers and existing bowlers who may require remedial training. All levels of coaching are available. Our current coaches are:

Shane Globits,
Irene Page,
James Wallace,
Keith O’Connor

Shane is a former Australian, QLD & NSW Representative and holds numerous Australian and State Titles.

Irene has won a number of Club & District Titles and has represented both Hastings District and NSW Country

Male and female bowlers can work with any of the coaches listed above.

Schedules permitting, recruitment drives are usually held around May. Other times may be organised if sufficient interest is expressed by people wanting to learn how to bowl. A recruitment drive will generally see around 80% of participants take up the sport as fully-fledged bowlers. Training sessions are followed up with a roll-up then a fun game/activity with hosts. Morning tea and a light lunch is also provided.

Anyone seeking bowls coaching can call the bowls organiser at any time on 02 6559 8259, who will pass on a message to the coaches.

Circuit training is conducted 2-3 times a year, and is suitable for new bowlers and existing bowlers seeking to improve their skills. Generally, coaches are available all year round to assist bowlers.

There is no cost for coaching. Bowlers can expect to learn all necessary skills over a 6-week period.

Bowlers are asked to bring flat-soled shoes, an eyeshade or cap, sunscreen and water to coaching sessions.

Useful Tips

Keep your weight on the balls of your feet when taking your stance on the mat.

Your feet should be facing the proposed line of delivery.

As your arm drops under the weight of the jack/bowl, take a normal walking step forward, swinging your arm as a firm pendulum beside and close to your body.

Backswing equals height of arm in front of body during stance.

Release the jack/bowl 15-20cm forward and to the side of your front foot.

90% of your weight should be over the front foot, stay down in follow-through with palm facing upward, along line of delivery.

Watch jack/bowl for approximately 5 seconds then step forward and off the mat.

Any correction needed is worked out before stepping off the mat.

The North Haven Women's Bowling Club

The North Haven Women's Bowling Club was officially opened on their own green on 6th March 1958 by the N.S.W.B.A. President Mrs Wolinski. The Club has always had the honour of being of the highest standard with champion bowlers over the past forty years. Some who have reached high achievements are: Margaret Lewis, Josie Bauder, Connie Philp, Gloria Wardrop and Daphne Shaw. Margaret, Josie, Connie and Daphne all went on to represent at State level. Daphne has gone even further to represent Australia, and has been a member of the Commonwealth Games twice.

A half-century from its beginnings, the NHWBC has 190 financial bowlers, with membership continuing to attract both long-standing members and new residents of the Camden Haven. The North Haven Men's Bowling Club

The North Haven Bowling & Recreation Club began as a Men's Bowling Club 1952, when a group of locals held a public meeting at North Haven Community Hall. With no Crown land, thus nowhere to bowl, these early founders set about acquiring land and pulling the necessary strings to bring the Club to life. With membership initially too low to acquire a liquor licence, the North Haven Women's Bowling Club was also established to meet the necessary licensing requirements.

The Men's Bowling Club was the main governing body until 1986, when the North Haven Bowling & Recreation Club Ltd was incorporated. Throughout its history, the Men's Bowling Club has provided the largest membership base of any of the main Club's sub-clubs and continues to draw hundreds of bowlers to its books every year.

In addition to the many annual competition days, Club Championships are held around the following times each year (please refer to the Calendar for specific dates):

Fours Championships - January
Major Singles Chamionships - February
Minor Singles Championships - February
Pairs Championships - March
